Advice

Parking in the UK need be nothing to worry about; it is not as complicated as is sometimes suggested.

In general when you need to park your car:

  • Find an Off Street car park and if it is a pay and display car park then make sure you purchase enough time to avoid the stress of running out of time and a subsequent fine. Err on the side of caution when estimating your time.
  • As most public sector car parks state at what time the need to pay ceases then consider buying enough time to take you past that time and you will have no worries, it will still be cheaper than getting fined.
  • Parking on the street and paying using a meter or Pay and Display or mobile phone will ALWAYS be more expensive than a car park and the maximum time you can park is often less than in a car park.
  • Wherever you park always check the signage to ensure that it is any area where you can park, the times during which you can park are visible and if payment is required.
  • Some owners of private land who do not want any cars other than their own parking on it may use clamping companies to control it, which is why you must always carefully read the signage.

Searching for a car park

Carparks4u is a great way of finding a suitable car park close to your destination. Just enter your post code and print out the map and directions. And for TomTom owners, simply transfer the location of the car park entrance on to your TomTom. Nice and easy.

Car Park Quality

A car is one of the biggest purchases people make, so a little thought about what car park you leave it in is always worthwhile. For example we list car parks that have achieved membership of the Safer Parking Scheme (Parkmark) an initiative of the Association of Chief Police Officers aimed at reducing crime and the fear of crime in parking facilities.

Safer parking status, Park Mark®, is awarded to parking facilities that have met the requirements of a risk assessment conducted by the Police.

These requirements mean the parking operator has put in place measures that help to deter criminal activity and anti-social behaviour, thereby doing everything they can to prevent crime and reduce the fear of crime in their parking facility.

For customers, using a Park Mark® Safer Parking facility means that the area has been vetted by the Police and has measures in place to create a safe environment.
